Ischaemic Optic Neuropathy
- Damage to optic nerve if posterior ciliary arteries occluded
- Fundoscopy shows a pale swollen optic disc
Temporal arteritis/Giant Cell arteritis
- Chronic granulomatous arteritis in head and neck arteries
- Vital to recognise as other eye at risk until treatment started
- Symptoms: malaise, jaw claudication, tender scalp/temporal arteries
- Association with polymyalgia rheumatica
- ESR >40 suggestive, also temporal artery biopsy
Treatment
Arteriosclerotic ischaemic optic neuropathy
- In younger patients: hypertension, lipid disorders, diabetes
- Treating these conditions may protect other eye
