- Formed from mesenchymal cells in embryo
- In phases of appositional growth (new cartilage formed at surface of existing) derived
from perichondrial fibroblasts
- Cells lose cytoplasmic processes
- nucleus becomes rounded
- cytoplasm increases and becomes more prominent
- Secrete cartilage matrix (type II collagen)
- Once completely surrounded by matrix become known as chondrocytes
