Abscess
- collection of pus surrounded by "pyogenic membrane"
- membrane consists of
- sprouting capillaries
- neutrophils
- occasional fibroblasts
- relatively inaccessible to antibodies and drugs
- Usually "points" and bursts
- may require surgical drainage
- In hollow viscous fibrin may obstruct outflow and lead to empyema
- May discharge along sinus tract
- may be complicated by dystrophic calcification
