Clomiphene

Uses

• anovulatory infertility
  • replaced ovarian drilling / resection in treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome

Mechanism

• induce GnRH release by occupying oestrogen receptors in the hypothalamus
• This interferes with feedback mechanisms for FSH and LH release.

Cautions

• may cause enlargement of cysts
• multiple ovulations

Route

• oral

Side-Effects

• visual disturbance
• ovarian hyperstimulation
• hot flushes
• abdominal discomfort
• haeadache
• nausea and vomiting
• depression
• insomnia
• breast tenderness
• menorrhagia
