Oxytocin
- causes contraction at fundus of pregnant uterus
- gives slow contractions with full relaxation in between
- effective when given parenterally (usually slow IV infusion)
- onset of action 1-2 mins
- usually given with amniotomy to induce or augment labour
Adverse Effects

Uterine spasm
- Uterine hyperstimulation
- Tetanic contractions
- fluid retention
- Water intoxication
- Hyponatraemia
Pharmacokinetics
- parenteral administration
- Short plasma t1/2 (5-10mins) mainly because of tissue
inactivation. A small amount is excreted via the kidneys
