Clinical Features

• acutely ill child
• high fever
• severe airflow obstruction (do NOT examine with tongue depressor)

Diagnosis

• culture
• counterimmunoelectrophoresis

Treatment

• intubation
• intravenous ceftazidime
  • 25-150 mg/kg
• chloramphenicol 7-10 days
  • 50-100mg /kg children
  • 4g /day adults
• cefuroxime

Prevention

• close contacts
  • rifampicin 20 mg/kg for 4 days
• vaccination 99% effective
