Path

  • passes upwards
  • directly in front of medial malleolus
  • ascends in superficial fascia 
    • medial side of leg
    • company of saphenous nerve
  • passes behind knee
  • curves forward around medial side of thigh
  • passes through saphenous opening
    • lower part
  • joins femoral vein about 1 1/2 inches below and lateral to pubic tubercle

Tributaries

  • at saphenous opening receives 
    • superficial circumflex iliac vein
    • superficial epigastric vein
    • superficial external pudendal vein
  • at mid thigh or higher
    • accessory vein
