  • A lesion that projects into the lumen (in this case of the bowel)

Symptoms and Signs

  • Passage of blood or mucus PR
  • Rarely
    • obstruction
    • intussusception

Investigations

  • Sigmoidoscopy & biopsy
  • Barium enema
  • Colonoscopy

Types

Hamartomas

  • Juvenile Polyps
    • Large or small bowel
    • Cause bleeding or obstruction
    • May auto-amputate in adolescence
  • Peutz-Jeghers
    • Diffuse GI polyposis
    • Mucocutaneous pigmentation of lips and gums
    • No malignant potential

Neoplastic polyps

  • Adenomatous polyps & villous adenomas
    • Malignant potential, esp. Villous adenoma
  • Familial Polyposis Coli
    • Gardners syndrome

Inflammatory Pseudopolyps

Tubular Adenoma

  • neoplastic polyps
  • small (<10mm)
  • resemble raspberry
  • most pedunculated, some sessile

Villous Adenoma

  • neoplastic polyp
  • often >20mm
  • sessile
  • elongated villi
