Right Subclavian Artery

  • Arises from brachiocephalic artery
    • behind right sternoclavicular joint
  • passes upward and laterally behind scalenus anterior
  • becomes continuous with axillary artery at outer border of first rib

Left Subclavian Artery

  • arises from arch of aorta
    • behind left common carotid artery
  • runs upward along left side of trachea and oesophagus
  • ascends to root of neck
  • arches laterally behind scalenus anterior
    • over apex of lung
  • becomes continuous with axillary artery
  • Divided into 3 part
    1. from origin to medial border scalenus anterior
    2. behind scalenus anterior
    3. lateral border of scalenus anterior to outer border 1st rib

      • scalenus anterior

    • anteriorly 
      • skin
      • superficial fascia
      • platysma
      • supraclavicular nerves
      • investing layer of deep cervical fascia
      • external jugular vein (+ tributaries)
      • suprascapular artery
      • clavicle
      • nerve to subclavius
      • subclavian vein lies below and in front of artery
    • posteriorly
      • lower trunk of the brachial plexus
      • scalenus medius
    • Superiorly
      • upper and middle trunks of brachial plexus
    • Inferiorly
      • upper surface of first rib
