5.4 SKELETAL TISSUE [Hist]

(a) Cartilage. Cells: chondroblasts, chondrocytes. Matrix of hyaline cartilage: proteoglycan aggregates / type II collagen (plus elastin in elastic cartilage; type I collagen in fibrocartilage).
(b) Bone. Cells: functions of osteoblasts, osteocytes, osteoclasts. Matrix: hydroxyapatite, type I collagen. Osteoid. Osteogenesis imperfecta.
Joints: synostoses, synchondroses, syndesmoses, diarthroses. Synovial membrane and fluid.
Structure of mature bone: lamellar structure, Haversian systems; trabeculae; cancellous bone.
Skeletogenesis; growth of long bones (structure of the epiphyseal plate).
Repair of fractures.
Remodelling. Appositional growth (accretion).
Calcium homeostasis and bone structure. Osteoporosis.
