Vagus

Course

  • exits skull via jugular foramen

Right Vagus

  • descends in thorax
  • first lying posterolaterally to brachiocephalic artery
  • lateral to trachea
  • medial to terminal part of azygos vein
  • passes behind root of right lung
  • assists in formation of pulmonary plexus
  • passes onto posterior surface of oesophagus
  • assists in formation of oesophageal plexus
  • passes through oesophageal opening of diaphragm to
  • reaches posterior surface of stomach

Left Vagus

  • descends in thorax between left common carotid and left subclavian arteries
  • crosses left side of aortic arch
  • crossed by left phrenic nerve
  • turns backward behind root of left lung
  • assists in formation of pulmoanry plexus
  • passes onto anterior surface of oesophagus
  • assists in formation of oesophageal plexus
  • passes through oesophageal opening in front of oesophagus
  • reaches posterior surface of stomach
