  • One of twelve paired nerves arising from brainstem

olfactory (I) sensory cribriform plate nose
optic (II) sensory optic canal retina
occulomotor (III) motor superior orbital fissure muscles of eye except lateral rectus and superior oblique
trochlear (IV) motor superior orbital fissure superior oblique
trigeminal (V) opthalmic sensory superior orbital fissure skin of forehead, lacrimal gland, nose
  maxillary sensory foramen rotundum skin of cheek, upper lip
  mandibular mixed foramen ovale skin of lower cheek, lower jaw (except angles), lower lip, anterior 2/3 tongue
muscles of mastication
abducent (VI) motor superior orbital fissure lateral rectus
facial (VII) mixed inferior auditory meatus/stylomastoid foramen muscles of expression, buccinator,lacrimal submandiular and sublingual glands
taste from anterior 2/3/ of tongue
vestibulocochlear (VIII) sensory internal auditory meatus ear
glossopharyngeal (IX) mixed jugular foramen oropharynx, posterior 1/3 of tongue
vagus (X) mixed jugular foramen major parasympathetic supply
accessory (XI) motor jugular foramen neck muscles
hypoglossal (XII) motor hypoglossal canal extrinsic muscles of tongue
