UK Screening Programme

• Women aged 20-64 screened every 3-5 years

Techniques

• Papanicalaou Smear

  • smeared on slide and stained for glycoprotein

• Liquid based cytology

  • allows Human papillomavirus (HPV) testing

Findings

• if normal repeat every 3-5 years

• BNA - repeat in six months, if ever 3 refer for colposcopy

• mild dyskaryosis - repeat six months, if ever 2 milds refer for colposcopy

• moderate and severe dyskaryosis - refer for colposcopy

• koilocytosis implies active HPV infection
