Principles of screening
(after Wilson and Jungner)
- The condition is an important health problem
- It's natural history is well understood
- There should be a recognisable early stage
- Treatment at an early stage should be more reliable than treatment started
at a later stage
- There should be a suitable test
- The test should be acceptable
- There should be adequate facilities for diagnosis and treatment of
abnormalities detected
- For diseases of insidious onset screening should be repeated at intervals
determined by the natural history
- Physical or psychological harm should be less than the benefit
- The cost should be balanced against the benefit
