Femoral Hernia

- Defect in transversalis fascia
- Hernia passes through femoral canal
- More common in females
- Carries a high risk of strangulation
- Often of Richter type
- part of wall herniates and loses blood supply
Presentation
Examination
- below and lateral to pubic tubercle
- firm
- like bouncing ball underwater
- percussion
- Auscultation
- bowel sounds rarely heard
- Often goes unnoticed
- May become tender and painful
- May be reducible
- May present as intestinal obstruction without an obvious cause
- Especially in obese patients
