Congenital Abnormalities

Rectal bleeding
- Common in children
- Rarely caused by tumour or haemorrhoids
- Anal Fissure
- Meckel's
diverticulum
- Often contains ectopic acid-secreting gastric mucosa
- rectal polyp
- rectal prolapse
- inflammatory bowel disease
Polyps
Other problems
- Rectal Prolapse common,
- Usually resolves spontaneously - soften stool and encourage regular
bowel opening
- Rectal polyp may occasionally be responsible & can be removed by
diathermy snare
- Submucosal injections of phenol in oil cause fibrosis and can be used
if failure to resolve
- Rarely may need suture
