• arises behind neck of mandible
• runs forward medial to neck of mandible
• reaches lower border of pterygoid muscle
• then passes upward and forward
• around (either superficial or deep to) lower head of lateral pterygoid
• enters infratemporal fossa
• gives branches
  • Inferior Alveolar Artery
  • Middle Meningeal Artery
  • small branches to lining of external auditory meatus and tympanic membrane
  • small branches to muscles of mastication
• leaves infratemporal fossa to enter pterygopalatine fossa
• splits into branches
  • Posterior Superior Alveolar Artery
  • Infraorbital Artery
  • Greater Palatine Artery
  • Pharyngeal Branch
  • Sphenopalatine Artery
