Sinuses

  • Air sinuses reduced the weight of the skull and add resonance to the voice
  • Unfortunately they are sites prone to infection
  • Important to know the relations of the sinus to know what may become involved in infection

Maxillary

  • pyramidal in shape
  • lined with mucous membrane
  • innervated by infraobital nerve (pain referred to upper jaw)
  • drainage high up in sinus opens up into middle meatus
  • roof formed by floor of orbit
  • floor formed by alveolar process (roots of upper teeth below sinus)

Frontal

  • roughly triangular in shape
  • opens into infundibulum (middle meatus) of nose
  • supplied by supraorbital nerve

Sphenoidal sinuses

  • opens above superior concha
  • supplied by posterior ethmoidal nerves (opthalmic)

Ethmoidal

  • between nose and orbit
  • opens into infundibulum, middle meatus and superior meatus
  • supplied by anterior and posterior ethmoidal nerves
