- Innervates smooth muscle, cardiac muscle and many types of glands
- Two major subdivisions often oppose each other
- Require a chain of two neurons to affect a response
- Cell body of first neuron lies in CNS and its axon terminate in an
autonomic ganglion of the PNS
- Cell bodies of seconnd neuron lie in autonomic ganglia and axons innervate
peripheral effectors
- Neurons in ganglia are multipolar
- Transmission is often cholinergic (nicotinic but differs from NMJ)
- Visceral sensory afferent often travel with the autonomic motr
fibres. Therefore they are termed sympathetic afferetns and parasympathetic
afferetns respectively.
