- descends in thorax
- first lying posterolaterally to brachiocephalic artery
- lateral to trachea
- medial to terminal part of azygos vein
- passes behind root of right lung
- assists in formation of pulmonary plexus
- passes onto posterior surface of oesophagus
- assists in formation of oesophageal plexus
- passes through oesophageal opening of diaphragm to
- reaches posterior surface of stomach

Left Vagus
- descends in thorax between left common carotid and left subclavian
arteries
- crosses left side of aortic arch
- crossed by left phrenic nerve
- turns backward behind root of left lung
- assists in formation of pulmoanry plexus
- passes onto anterior surface of oesophagus
- assists in formation of oesophageal plexus
- passes through oesophageal opening in front of oesophagus
- reaches posterior surface of stomach
