Branch of the Sciatic Nerve at lower third of
thigh
Motor Supply
To dorsiflexors and eversion muscles of ankle and toes
- superficial peroneal nerve
- peroneus longus
- peroneus brevis.
- depp peroneal nerve
- tibialis anterior
- extensor digitorum longus
- extensor hallucis longus
- peroneus tertius
- extensor digitorum brevis
Sensory Supply
- lateral aspect of calf
- dorsum of foot and toes except skin between great and second toe
Path
- arises in lower third of thigh
- passes through popliteal fossa close to medial aspect of biceps femoris
- crosses superficially to to lateral head of gastrocnemius
- passes around lateral aspect of neck of fibula (relatively
superficial)
- passes deep to peroneus longus
- splits into superficial and deep peroneal nerves
superficial
- 2/3 down lateral aspect of leg nerve emerges through deep fascia and runs
distally over front of leg and ankle
deep
- descends on interosseous membrane
- crosses ankle midway between the two malleoli
Common Pathology
- commonly injured in fractures of fibula neck
- foot drop
- inability to dorsiflex or evert foot
- sensory loss over lateral aspect of leg + dorsum of foot and toes
