Predisposition to thrombosis when

  • there is damage to vessel wall

  • change in flow of blood

  • change in constituents of blood

E.g.

  • Trauma

    • major trauma

    • recent surgery - 7-10days post-op

    • homocysteinuria

  • stasis

    • immobility

    • pregnancy

  • hypercoagulability (thrombophilia)

    • genetic

      • Factor V Leiden

      • Anti-thrombin III

      • Protein C and S

      • Anti-phospholipid syndrome

    • OCP / oestrogen / HRT

    • polycythaemia

    • antiphospholipid syndrome

    • malignancy

    • smoking

    • nephrotic syndrome

    • obesity

Other Risk Factors

  • age

  • cardiac failure

  • paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria

  • previous history or family history

  • sickle cell anaemia

  • inflammatory bowel disease

  • varicose veins

  • recent MI

  • obesity
