Cytomegalovirus (CMV)

- naked DNA situated extrachromosomally in endothelium of arterial wall and
in T lymphocytes
Clinical Features
- usually asymptomatic
- may mimic Infectious Mononucleosis
- fever
- mononucleosis + atypical lymphocytes
- hepatitis +/- jaundice
Transmission
- kissing
- sexual contact
- blood transfusion
- transplacental
Diseases
- disseminated infection
- immunocompromised
- may be fatal
- Encephalitis
- retinitis
- pneumonitis
- diffuse involvement of GI tract
- Intrauterine infection
- primary infection acquired early in pregnancy
- CNS
- microencephaly
- motor disorders
- liver
- jaundice
- hepatosplenomegaly
- blood
- thrombocytopenia
- haemolytic anaemia

Treatment
- ganciclovir (5mg / kg for
14-21 days)
- reduces retinitis, GI damage
- less effective against pneumonitis
