Femoral Hernia

  • Defect in transversalis fascia
  • Hernia passes through femoral canal
  • More common in females
  • Carries a high risk of strangulation
  • Often of Richter type
    • part of wall herniates and loses blood supply

Presentation

  • Lump in groin

Examination

  • below and lateral to pubic tubercle
  • firm
    • like bouncing ball underwater
  • percussion
    • dull
  • Auscultation
    • bowel sounds rarely heard
  • Often goes unnoticed
  • May become tender and painful
  • May be reducible
  • May present as intestinal obstruction without an obvious cause
    • Especially in obese patients
