- If mistakenly treated with steroids (for IBS) results may be
fatal
- Usually affects proximal colon
- Colicky abdominal pain
- erratic bowel habit
- episodes of blood-stained loose stools
- RIF tenderness
- If distal
- chronic watery diarrhoea + blood and mucus
- Entire colon
- generalised abdominal tenderness
- pyrexia
- progressive weight loss
- liver abscess
- general ill-health
- swinging pyrexia
- sweating attacks
- pain in liver area
- enlarged tender liver
- Diagnosed on histology, stool samples, scrapings from lesions
- Treatment : Metronidazole, 400mg TDS
- Giardiasis
