7.2.5 Nerve Supply

Knowledge of origin, region of supply, common sites/effects of lesions, common clinical tests (reflex jerks); identification of major nerves on prosections.
Dermatomes: concept, distribution in upper limb, clinical significance in mapping injuries to spinal roots.
Anatomical basis of determination of nerve root, brachial plexus and major nerve lesions from testing sensation and motor function.

7.2.5.1 Brachial plexus

Principles of organisation; anterior primary rami C5–T1 — roots of brachial plexus; trunks (upper, middle, lower), suprascapular nerve; divisions (anterior (to flexors) and posterior (to extensors)); cords (lateral, medial, posterior) (identification, relationship to axillary structures, terminal branches). Branches of roots (to scalene muscles, subclavius, rhomboids, serratus anterior)
Effects of damage to upper, lower trunks, T1

7.2.5.2 Lateral cord of the brachial plexus

Lateral pectoral nerve

7.2.5.2.1 Musculocutaneous nerve

Segmental origin; muscular supply; terminal sensory branch Lateral cutaneous nerve of forearm.

7.2.5.2.2 Median nerve

Segmental origin; roots from lateral and medial cords; muscular supply; sensory distribution; relationship to carpal tunnel (palmar cutaneous branch).
Effects of median nerve damage in supracondylar fractures of humerus, carpal tunnel syndrome.

7.2.5.3 Medial cord of the brachial plexus

Distribution, esp. medial root of median nerve. Medial pectoral nerve; medial cutaneous nerves of arm and forearm

7.2.5.3.1 Ulnar nerve

Segmental origin; muscular supply; sensory distribution.
Effects of lesion at elbow, wrist.

7.2.5.4 Posterior cord of the brachial plexus

Distribution to extensor muscles and skin. Upper and lower subscapular nerves; posterior cutaneous nerve of arm.

7.2.5.4.1 Axillary nerve

Segmental origin; muscular supply; sensory distribution.
Effects on nerve of shoulder dislocation

7.2.5.4.2 Radial nerve

Segmental origin; muscular supply; sensory distribution.
Effects on nerve of mid-shaft fracture of humerus "Drunkard’s palsy"
